Who influenced who
|
That's the point. Often, when people tries to describe the music of a band
whitout the aid of sound, makes use of comparisons: "It's a sort of X...",
"In the same vein of...", "X+Y put together", "Vocals reminds of X", and so
on. So the question arises: which are the bands in the progressive world
that most commonly appear in those discussions?, or, in other words, which
are or have been the most influent bands in progressive music?
An answer for it has been seeked in the
Gibraltar
Encyclopedia of progressive rock, in which a number of searches has been
performed looking for the number of times a band is cited when trying to
describe another. For example: search for: Genesis, and the
number of entries in which the name Genesis appears in the band
description is noted down.
In such a way the following list has been set, in which the names of the
bands whose number of appearances in different entries was higher than 10
is shown in decreasing order (one * = 2 entries).
1.Genesis..............(113)*******************************************************
2.Yes..................(110)******************************************************
3.King Crimson......... (86)******************************************
4.Marillion............ (63)*******************************
5.Camel................ (62)******************************
6.Pink Floyd........... (52)*************************
7.Gong................. (41)*******************
8.Magma................ (38)******************
9.Tangerine Dream...... (37)*****************
10.Gentle Giant......... (36)*****************
11.Rush................. (28)**************
12.Jethro Tull.......... (27)*************
13.Emerson, Lake &Palmer (26)*************
14.Mahavishnu Orchestra. (25)************
15.Mike Oldfield........ (21)**********
16.Hawkwind............. (20)**********
17.Frank Zappa.......... (19)*********
18.Queen................ (19)*********
19.Kansas............... (17)********
20.Led Zeppelin......... (15)*******
21.Alan Parsons Project. (13)******
22.Supertramp........... (10)*****
So if conclusions are wanted, one should say that there's a first level for
bands like Genesis, Yes, and King Crimson; and a second one
for Marillion, Camel, and Pink Floyd; and then the rest.
