None others than three ex-members of the Swedish band Book of Hours,
are in this band, of course, Swedish too. But Wolverine plays a very
different style to Book of Hours. While the album of BoH was clearly in
a Landberk and Anekdoten vein, Wolverine are in prog-metal. And as I
supposed, I like Wolverine less than Book of Hours, probably because
I am not a great prog-metal fan. Wolverine are in a similar vein to Pain of
Salvation or Fates Warning, not too original certainly, with some more
symphonic and melodic moments.
I don't like the album too much, but nevertheless vocalist Stefan Zell seems
to me to be owner of a great personality, as I already said in the Book of
Hours' album review. Therefore, the vocalist is the one who more pleases me
here, though curiously, being a band related to Dream Theater and similar
groups, they play also with some Opeth like grunt vocals by the drummer,
though very few ones.
Personally, I like the most symphonic and melodic tracks as "Leaving
Yesterday" with a guest female singer, or "Post Life". The rest are typical
prog-metal tracks with few good moments.
Anyway, it is a good recording, that moreover surely it will please to
many Dream Theater or Pain of Salvation fans.
