NeBeLNeST is a magnificent French band that with the release of this first
album in 1999, passed to increase the list of current great bands.
NeBeLNeST has a very personal style, influenced mainly by the King Crimson
of "Devil's Triangle" ("In the Wake of Poseidon") and the
Cross-Fripp-Wetton-Bruford period. But I think they have also obvious
influences of Univers Zero and some French bands corresponding to three
decades, as the 70's Pulsar (in the enigmatic mellotron passages), French
bands of the second half of 80's Edhels and Minimum Vital, and 90's band
Xaal.
Mellotron fans are lucky, because this one is probably the current album
with a more remarkable use of that instrument. It creates intense
atmospheres and surrounds everything in many parts of the album. Also, a lot
of crimson-esque instrumental energy is found, with touches of hard rocker
intensity, typical of the Fripp's band, and RIO's sonorous chaos. There is
also a place for melodies in some moments, though.
The whole album is instrumental, and the only drawback that might have, is
that the tracks might be more varied, or otherwise, it could be a little
shorter work. But anyway it seems to be a very advisable album. The best is
"Shafoo" and "Najha", which are pure dynamite, enigmatic and noisy
"Solilock", raging "Absinthe", and the intensity of the most powerful "Crab
Nebula".
A great album for those who are looking for complex sounds King Crimson kind
near to RIO.
